Overview

Job Title: Maths Teacher (Secondary School)

Salary: MPS/UPS (dependent on experience)

Start Date: January 2026

Job Purpose:

To deliver high-quality teaching of Mathematics across Key Stages 3 and 4 (and optionally Key Stage 5), ensuring that all students are supported to achieve their full potential and develop strong numeracy and problem-solving skills.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning:

  • Plan and deliver engaging and effective Maths lessons in accordance with the National Curriculum.
  • Teach a range of abilities across Key Stages 3 and 4 (and KS5 if applicable).
  • Prepare students for external assessments, including GCSE (and A-Level where appropriate).
  • Use a range of teaching strategies to accommodate different learning styles and needs.
  • Create a positive learning environment that promotes high expectations and encourages independent learning.

Curriculum and Planning:

  • Contribute to the design and development of schemes of work and teaching materials.
  • Use data to inform teaching and adapt lessons to support pupil progress.
  • Ensure all students are appropriately challenged, including those with SEND and the most able.

Assessment and Reporting:

  • Mark work in line with school policy and provide constructive feedback to students.
  • Track and monitor student progress, using data to target interventions where necessary.
  • Write reports and attend parent/carer evenings to communicate student performance.

Professional Development:

  • Engage fully with the school’s CPD programme and performance management processes.
  • Stay up to date with developments in Maths education and pedagogy.
  • Participate in departmental and whole-school training sessions and initiatives.

Pastoral and Wider Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a form tutor, supporting the academic and pastoral development of students.
  • Promote the school’s ethos and values in all interactions with students, staff, and the wider community.
  • Participate in extracurricular activities and whole-school events where appropriate.
  • Uphold the highest standards of behaviour management and student conduct.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • A degree in Mathematics or a closely related subject
  • Knowledge of the current Maths curriculum and assessment requirements (GCSE and/or A-Level)
  • Ability to teach Maths effectively across KS3 and KS4
  • High expectations of students and strong classroom management skills
  • Commitment to safeguarding and the welfare of young people

Desirable:

  • Experience teaching A-Level Maths or Further Maths
  • Proven track record of raising student achievement
  • Experience supporting students with SEND or EAL
  • Familiarity with digital tools and online platforms to enhance teaching and learning
