Overview

Job Title: English Teacher (Secondary School)

Salary: MPS/UPS (Dependent on experience)

Start Date: January 2026


Job Purpose:

To deliver high-quality English teaching to Key Stages 3 and 4 (and optionally Key Stage 5), fostering a love for literature and language, ensuring student progress, and contributing to the wider life of the school.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning:

  • Plan and deliver engaging and differentiated English lessons in line with the National Curriculum.
  • Teach across a range of year groups (Years 7–11, and potentially Sixth Form).
  • Prepare students for GCSE English Language and Literature examinations (and A-Level, if applicable).
  • Use a variety of assessment strategies to monitor and track student progress.
  • Set high expectations for student behaviour and achievement.

Curriculum and Planning:

  • Contribute to the development of schemes of work and resources.
  • Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all students, including SEND, EAL and high achievers.
  • Integrate literacy strategies and support cross-curricular language development.

Assessment and Reporting:

  • Mark and assess students’ work in accordance with school policies.
  • Provide regular feedback to students to support progress.
  • Attend parent/carer consultations and produce written reports on student performance.
  • Professional Development
  • Take part in CPD opportunities offered by the school and Trust.
  • Engage in performance management and self-reflection to improve teaching practice.

Pastoral and Wider Responsibilities:

  • Act as a form tutor, supporting the academic and personal development of students.
  • Participate in school events, extracurricular activities, and trips.
  • Promote safeguarding and the welfare of children and young people.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Degree in English or a related subject
  • Proven ability to deliver effective and inspiring lessons
  • Strong understanding of the English curriculum and assessment frameworks
  • Commitment to inclusive education and student well-being

Desirable:

  • Experience teaching A-Level English
  • Evidence of raising student attainment
  • Familiarity with current educational developments in the UK
