Job Title: Food Technology Teacher (Key Stages 3–4, potential KS5)
Start Date: ASAP until Christmas, Full-time
Job Purpose:
To deliver high-quality teaching and learning in Food Preparation and Nutrition (Food Technology), inspiring pupils to develop practical life skills, creativity, and an understanding of healthy eating, nutrition, and food science. The role includes planning and delivering engaging lessons, assessing student progress, and contributing to the broader life of the Design & Technology department and the school.
Key Responsibilities:
Teaching and Learning:
- Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging lessons in Food Technology in accordance with the national curriculum and exam specifications (e.g., AQA, OCR, or Eduqas).
- Teach across Key Stages 3 and 4; potentially KS5 depending on school provision.
- Create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes student progress and attainment.
- Use a variety of teaching strategies to cater to a range of learning styles and abilities.
- Set, mark, and assess student work in line with school and department policies.
- Monitor and report on student progress and take action to ensure students achieve their targets.
Curriculum and Planning:
- Contribute to the development of schemes of work, assessment strategies, and teaching resources for Food Technology.
- Ensure lessons are compliant with health & safety regulations and food hygiene standards.
- Stay current with developments in food education and adjust planning accordingly.
Classroom Management:
- Maintain high standards of behaviour and discipline in line with school policies.
- Foster a positive learning environment where students are motivated and engaged.
Health & Safety:
- Ensure that all practical lessons follow correct food hygiene and safety procedures.
- Maintain equipment and manage food supplies within budgetary constraints.
- Complete relevant risk assessments and adhere to COSHH and school policies.
Pastoral Responsibilities:
- Act as a form tutor and contribute to the pastoral care and personal development of students.
- Participate in parent meetings, report writing, and communication with families and carers.
Wider School Contribution:
- Participate in school events, open evenings, extra-curricular activities, and school trips.
- Engage in continuous professional development (CPD) and whole-school training.
Person Specification
Essential:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in the UK.
- Relevant degree or equivalent qualification in Food Technology or related subject.
- Experience of teaching Food Technology at secondary school level (KS3 and KS4).
- Strong knowledge of the national curriculum and GCSE specifications for Food Preparation and Nutrition.
- Excellent classroom and behaviour management skills.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
Desirable:
- Experience of teaching at Key Stage 5.
- Experience of curriculum development.
- Food hygiene or safety qualifications (e.g., Level 2/3 Food Hygiene Certificate).
- Willingness to run extra-curricular clubs or competitions (e.g., cooking club).
