Job Title: EYFS Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)
Reports to: EYFS Lead / SENCO / Deputy Headteacher
Start Date: November 2025
Job Purpose:
To support teaching and learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), working closely with the class teacher to raise the attainment and progress of all children. The HLTA will plan, deliver and evaluate learning activities for groups or whole classes under the direction of the teacher, contribute to the assessment process, and support the broader development of the children in a nurturing and stimulating environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Teaching and Learning Support
- Lead planned learning activities for individuals, groups or whole classes in the EYFS, as directed by the teacher.
- Work independently to plan, prepare, and deliver sessions aligned with the EYFS curriculum
- Support the development of children's early language, literacy, numeracy, and personal, social and emotional development.
- Use a range of strategies to manage behaviour and promote a positive learning environment.
- Adapt learning activities and resources to meet the needs of pupils, including those with SEND or EAL.
Assessment and Record Keeping
- Observe and assess children’s progress against EYFS Early Learning Goals (ELGs) and Development Matters.
- Record and report on children's progress to the class teacher and EYFS lead.
- Contribute to the planning and review of Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), where appropriate.
- Maintain accurate records of interventions and support provided.
- Child Development and Welfare
- Promote the safeguarding and welfare of children in line with school policy.
- Help children with daily routines, including toileting, dressing, feeding, and hygiene where necessary.
- Provide emotional support and foster children’s self-esteem and independence.
- Professional Development and Teamwork
- Work collaboratively with the EYFS team, attending planning and team meetings.
- Support and mentor other support staff where appropriate.
- Participate in ongoing professional development, training and performance reviews.
Person Specification:
Essential:
- HLTA Status or Level 4 qualification in Early Years/Childcare or equivalent.
- Experience of working in an EYFS setting within a UK primary school.
- Strong understanding of the EYFS Statutory Framework and Development Matters.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Able to use initiative and work independently under the guidance of teaching staff.
- Good organisational and record-keeping skills.
- Understanding of safeguarding procedures and commitment to promoting the welfare of children.
Desirable:
- Paediatric First Aid qualification.
- Experience supporting children with SEND.
- Experience using Tapestry or similar online learning journal systems.
