Job Title: Second in Charge of Mathematics
Department: Mathematics
Reports to: Head of Mathematics / Senior Leadership Team
Salary: £44,000 to £50,000 plus TLR (Teaching and Learning Responsibility) allowance
Job Purpose:
To support the Head of Mathematics in leading and managing the Mathematics Department to ensure high standards of teaching, learning, and student achievement. The 2iC will play a key role in curriculum development, assessment, and staff support, and will deputise for the Head of Department as required.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Management
- Assist the Head of Mathematics in the strategic and day-to-day leadership of the department.
- Lead on specific areas within the department (e.g., Key Stage coordination, curriculum innovation, intervention programs).
- Support the development and implementation of departmental policies and improvement plans.
- Take responsibility for the department in the absence of the Head of Mathematics.
Teaching & Learning
- Deliver high-quality mathematics teaching across the appropriate key stages.
- Model outstanding classroom practice and support the development of teaching across the department.
- Lead initiatives to raise achievement and engagement in mathematics.
- Monitor the quality of teaching and learning through lesson observations, work scrutiny, and data analysis.
Curriculum & Assessment
- Contribute to the design and implementation of a broad, balanced, and challenging mathematics curriculum.
- Lead on the development of schemes of work, lesson resources, and assessment strategies.
- Analyse student data to identify trends, set targets, and implement interventions to raise attainment.
- Organise and oversee internal assessments and support preparation for external examinations.
Staff Development
- Support the induction and mentoring of new staff, ECTs (Early Career Teachers), and trainees.
- Lead departmental CPD (Continuing Professional Development) activities and share best practices.
- Provide coaching and support to colleagues as needed.
- Student Progress & Support
- Monitor student progress and work closely with the Head of Mathematics, SENCO, and pastoral teams to support underachieving students.
- Promote a positive attitude to mathematics across the school community.
- Organise enrichment activities such as maths clubs, competitions, and revision sessions.
Person Specification:
Essential:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
- Strong subject knowledge in Mathematics
- Evidence of excellent classroom practice and student outcomes
- Experience in curriculum planning and assessment
- Ability to lead and motivate others
- Excellent communication and organisational skills
Desirable:
- Experience in a leadership role (e.g., Key Stage Coordinator, Maths Lead)
- Experience of mentoring or coaching staff
- Knowledge of current educational developments and best practices in Mathematics teaching
