Job Title: Lead Practitioner Science

Job purpose:
We are seeking an exceptional and motivated Lead Practitioner of Science, ideally a physicist, to play a key role in driving excellence across our school. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled and passionate teacher with the vision to inspire both students and colleagues.
The Lead Practitioner (LP) of Science will be responsible for driving the highest standards of teaching and learning within the department. They will model outstanding practice, lead on pedagogy, and work closely with the Head of Department and Second in Charge to improve student outcomes. Together with the Head of Science, the LP will oversee the quality and development of the curriculum across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5, ensuring it is ambitious, engaging, and accessible for all learners.
A key aspect of the role is leading and supporting the quality of teaching practice in the department. The successful candidate will support professional development, champion innovative and inclusive teaching strategies, and contribute to whole-school STEM initiatives, with particular emphasis on Science education.
Main Duties
Raising the Quality of Teaching and Learning:
· Carry out teaching responsibilities in line with professional duties, delivering high-quality lessons across Key Stages 3–5.
· Model outstanding teaching practice and provide mentoring/coaching to teachers, trainee teachers, and ECTs.
· Lead in monitoring, evaluating, and reviewing standards and provision in the Science department.
· Produce high-quality teaching materials that support excellent classroom practice.
· Prepare and deliver training sessions to enhance teachers’ practice across the school.
· Use data to identify pupils or groups needing targeted support and develop strategies to raise achievement.
· Promote adaptive teaching, inclusion, and positive behaviour strategies across the department.
· Set ambitious targets for students and monitor the impact of interventions.
Monitoring and Evaluation:
· Coordinate work scrutinies, learning walks, lesson observations, and other monitoring activities to improve teaching and learning.
· Analyse data from assessments and monitoring to inform teacher development strategies and school improvement planning.
· Support departmental self-evaluation and contribute to the development of action plans.
Leadership and Management of Staff:
· Lead and support teaching staff to ensure consistent high standards across the department.
· Work closely with the Head of Department and Second in Charge to drive improvement in teaching and learning.
· Contribute to the recruitment, deployment, and professional development of staff
Professional Development:
· Lead and share best practice in pedagogy, keeping up-to-date with current research and innovations in teaching and learning.
· Identify and support high-quality CPD opportunities to improve department-wide teaching standards.
· Participate in appraisal and professional development processes for self and, where appropriate, others.
· Lead professional learning groups as identified by the School Improvement Plan
Safeguarding:
· Work in line with statutory safeguarding guidance (e.g., Keeping Children Safe in Education, Prevent) and school safeguarding policies.
· Promote the welfare of all pupils, working with the DSL to share concerns as necessary.
Student Experience:
· Contribute to an ethos, curriculum and educational direction, which secure sustained improvement in students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development so preparing them for adult life.
Any Other Duties:
· Act as a form tutor, if required.
· Support whole-school numeracy initiatives.
· Undertake other duties as requested by line management; the duties listed are not exhaustive.
