Job Title: Science Technician
Reports to: Head of Science / Senior Science Technician
Start: ASAP until July,
Hours: 8-4pm, Friday is 8-3.30pm and one day in the week will be 8-1pm
Job Purpose:
To provide practical support to the science department, ensuring that teachers and students have the necessary equipment, resources, and safe working environment to deliver effective science lessons. The role involves preparing experiments, maintaining laboratory equipment, and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Practical and Technical Support
- Prepare and set up materials and equipment for practical science lessons (biology, chemistry, physics)
- Assist during practical lessons when required
- Clear away, clean, and store equipment safely after lessons
- Assist in the preparation of materials for science clubs, open evenings, and practical exams
- Laboratory Management
- Maintain stock levels of chemicals, equipment, and consumables
- Safely store and label chemicals in accordance with COSHH regulations
- Organise, check, and maintain laboratory equipment and apparatus
- Maintain records of safety checks, inventories, and risk assessments
Health and Safety
- Ensure laboratories and prep rooms comply with health and safety standards
- Support the implementation of school safety policies and procedures
- Dispose of hazardous waste materials safely and correctly
- Keep up to date with CLEAPSS guidelines and best practices
Administrative Support
- Assist with ordering resources and managing departmental budgets
- Keep accurate records of experiments and equipment usage
- Support teaching staff with administrative tasks as needed
Person Specification:
Essential:
- Good general education, including GCSEs (or equivalent) in science subjects
- Understanding of laboratory procedures and safety
- Organised, methodical, and able to work independently
- Good communication skills and a proactive attitude
Desirable:
- Previous experience as a science technician or in a lab-based role
- Science-related qualification (A-Level or BTEC, or a degree)
- Knowledge of CLEAPSS, COSHH, and health and safety in educational settings
- First Aid or H&S training (may be provided by school)
Working Conditions:
- Based primarily in the science prep room and school laboratories
- Term-time only, with occasional additional hours for events or setup
- Some lifting and handling of equipment and chemicals required
