Job Title: Science Technician
Reports to: Senior Science Technician / Head of Science
Job Purpose:
To support the delivery of high-quality science education by providing technical assistance to teachers and students in the Science Department. This includes preparing, maintaining, and organising equipment and materials for lessons, ensuring health and safety standards are met, and assisting in practical classroom activities when required.
Key Responsibilities:
Practical Support:
- Prepare materials, equipment, and resources for practical science lessons (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics).
- Assist teachers and students during practical lessons as required.
- Set up and clear away apparatus before and after lessons.
- Trial practical activities and assist in their development.
Health & Safety:
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations in the preparation and use of scientific equipment and materials (including COSHH and CLEAPSS guidelines).
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organised working environment in prep rooms and laboratories.
- Safely dispose of chemical and biological waste.
- Conduct regular safety checks on equipment.
Resource Management:
- Maintain an inventory of equipment, chemicals, and other resources.
- Order and restock consumables as necessary.
- Monitor the condition of stock and arrange for repair or replacement of faulty equipment.
- Administrative Duties:
- Keep accurate records of risk assessments and safety data sheets.
- Assist in the organisation of practical assessment tasks (e.g., GCSE required practicals).
- Support with the management of science department documentation and materials.
Person Specification:
- Criteria Essential Desirable
- Qualifications GCSEs (A*-C / 9-4) in Science and Maths or equivalent A Level Science or relevant technician qualification
- Experience Previous lab or technical experience (can include placements) Experience working in a school science department
- Knowledge Basic understanding of lab equipment and safety Knowledge of CLEAPSS/COSHH
- Skills Organised, reliable, able to work independently and as part of a team Confidence in supporting students in a classroom setting
- Personal Attributes Enthusiastic, adaptable, attention to detail Interest in science education
